Birmingham ShowerBox today got into hot water at Birmingham Cathedral. Two weeks ago, we were ready to provide the first showers in Birmingham for those who wanted one, but were let down when the water wouldn’t heat up in the van. Following a bit of technical help (there was too much gas in the tank – who knew this was possible) and some testing we arrived back at the Cathedral this morning hoping for the best. We attached the water. Plugged in the electricity. Turned on the showers – they were cold again!!!
After 30 seconds of swearing the solution was clear. We haven’t turned on the gas!! D’ooooh. Within 20 seconds the showers were flowing hot and steamy. We’ve had many bumps in the road since we first had this idea, and bolstered by the confidence of Sarah and the ShowerBox Trustees, and the work of too many to mention, we provided our first shower today at 9:30am.
It was a relatively quiet day for both us and the foodbank who operate near-by. But 5 showers today is a great start and for those 5 people, a better start to the day than they could have imagined. We will be back next Tuesday for more showers. Best remember to turn on the gas next time!
